Hello 6th Grade Families,
Today, the 6th graders and I went over the last 5 words in Unit 1 of their vocabulary book and quickly reviewed the 5 from yesterday.

We read more from Wonder  by R. J. Palacio. We discussed why our opinions changed regarding julian. Students were expected to provide evidence to back up their opinion. We also worked on our inference skills when we read that auggie told his mom that julian wasn't asking his question in a mean way because we know that wasn't true. the 6th graders came to the conclusion that he did this to protect his mom and her feelings, not julian, because he loves his mom. we were also able to infer that based on what auggie said when describing his walk around the neighborhood that he kept his head down. students were able to provide evidence to support their answer.

Best,
Mrs. Baier

Hello 6th Grade Families,

Today, the 6th graders and I went over the first 5 words in Unit 1 of their vocabulary book. We worked on ways to remember the definitions. Afterwards, we had a brief review of common and proper nouns to ensure that the students remembered what they were and how to identify them. Lastly, we started reading our class novel, Wonder, by R. J. Palacio. We met our main character, August or Auggie, and learned a little bit about him and his struggles. We had a conversation regarding what it means to be "normal" and I showed the class what a cleft palate looks like because that is something that was mentioned in the book (one of Auggie's differences).

Best,
Mrs. Baier

Hello 6th Grade Families,

Today, the 6th graders and I went over the Unit 1 words in vocabulary. This year they will have 20 words. We read the short excerpt and then discussed each of the 20 words. Each day we will go over a few of the words to help the 6th graders better understand them. Overall, they did a GREAT job!

Best,
Mrs. Baier

Hello 6th Grade Families,

WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR! The 6th graders have been doing an EXCELLENT job in class. We have already started with some foundations in reading comprehension and overall discussion regarding the mechanics of the classroom. The first few days were centered around setting up each students Individual Reading Notebook (IRN). This is the marble composition notebook that they will be taking home on a daily basis. The IRN is there to enforce each student's reading ability while allowing students to find books that are just right for them. If I think that your child is not challenging themselves enough or has chosen a book that may be a bit too difficult, I will let them know. The IRN is helping students write effective summaries and express their thoughts on literature.

The following are a few anchor charts that we've done so far in class: (if you click the image it should rotate it)

This is the book that was used to guide students in our discussion of Inference, Schema, and Elements of a Setting. We will also use this for character traits.

S-E-E Writing is the type of writing that is expected in the middle school classroom.
